Hyderabad, April 28 (). Urologists from the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Secunderabad, successfully removed 154 stones from the right kidney of a 45-year-old male patient.
The CT scan report of the patient, a resident of Ramagundam region of Telangana, indicated multiple kidney stones, the largest of which measured approximately 62 mm by 39 mm.
This large stone was spread all over the calyx of the kidney. Endoscopic surgery was used to fragment the largest kidney stone first and many of the fragments were retrieved. The doctors said that all the secondary stones were retained and the total number of stones removed including the biggest one from the kidney was 154.
Talking about the patient, Raghvendra Kulkarni, Consultant Urologist, AINU, said, “Staghorn calculi are complex kidney stones that occupy most of the renal collecting system.
These kidney stones are associated with high morbidity, which can result in frequent urinary tract infections, kidney injury, and patients may require dialysis if untreated. Managing patients with staghorn calculi can be challenging, especially in diabetics. Advances in technology and techniques have enabled effective treatment with minimal morbidity.
Raghavendra Kulkarni further added that the patient had to undergo multi tract PCNL to clear the stone completely. PCNL has evolved into the first choice of treatment for patients with complex or large kidney stone burdens.
Several studies have proved the safety and efficacy of PCNL for kidney stones. Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni also thanked his team of experts, which included Dr. Gopal Ramdas Tak, Dr. Suraj Pinni and anesthetist Dr. Srinivas.
