NDA Starts Strong as Bihar Election Vote Counting Commences

The counting of votes for the 243-seat Bihar Assembly commenced at 8 am, revealing a robust beginning for the NDA. In the initial hour, the alliance surpassed the majority mark of 122 seats, leaving the Mahagathbandhan considerably behind in early estimates. Although the RJD temporarily led over the BJP in seat counts, the BJP swiftly reclaimed its edge, leading in nearly 80 constituencies by around 9:40 am. Crucial areas such as Lakhisarai, Alinagar, Buxar, and Patna Sahib indicated a lead for the BJP, while the RJD was ahead in Raghopur, Hajipur, Bodh Gaya, and other locations. These numbers, however, are based on early trends, with a clearer picture expected by evening.

Most exit polls have suggested a decisive victory for the NDA, though the Mahagathbandhan is optimistic about exceeding these forecasts. Tejashwi Yadav is spearheading the INDIA bloc’s campaign as their chief ministerial candidate, while the NDA has not declared a candidate, drawing attention to Nitish Kumar’s political future. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party is also participating, having secured early leads in a few seats. The Election Commission began the counting process with postal ballots before transitioning to electronic votes. The state recorded an unprecedented voter turnout in both phases—65.08% in the first and 69.20% in the second, the highest since 1951.

Security measures were reinforced at all counting centers, with multiple layers of protection around strong rooms and limitations on gatherings or celebrations. Several notable constituencies, including Raghopur, Mahua, and various seats in the Seemanchal region, remain under observation. While exit polls generally forecasted a sweeping victory for the NDA, one survey by Journo Mirror predicted a victory for the Mahagathbandhan. Controversies arose ahead of the counting, including an RJD leader’s comment about a “Nepal-like situation,” which received significant backlash. A total of 2,616 candidates contested across 243 constituencies in the two-phase election held on November 6 and 11. As counting continues, early results show fluctuating leads for both alliances, with the NDA steadily solidifying its position.
