Apple is preparing for a significant overhaul of its device lineup, intending to incorporate OLED displays in its iPads and MacBooks in the upcoming years. A recent Bloomberg report indicates that the tech company will start this transition by replacing traditional LCD panels with advanced OLED technology, initially with the iPad Mini and later expanding to the MacBook Air. The iPad Mini is set to spearhead Apple’s OLED rollout, becoming the first in its lineup to feature this new display technology, which promises richer contrast, deeper blacks, and better energy efficiency. However, this upgrade may come with a price increase of approximately $100 (around ₹8,830) in the U.S. market.
In addition to the display upgrade, Apple is reportedly testing a new water-resistant casing for the iPad Mini, inspired by iPhone durability standards. This redesign may also include an upgraded speaker system that employs ‘vibration-related technology’ for improved audio clarity. If these reports are accurate, the OLED iPad Mini is expected to launch in 2026. Following the iPad Mini, the iPad Air will be the next model to adopt OLED technology, but consumers will have to wait longer for this upgrade. The upcoming M5-powered iPad Air, set for release in 2026, will still use an LCD panel, with the transition to OLED anticipated for the next model in 2027.
Notably, the high-end iPad Pro has already embraced OLED screens, providing premium display performance. Apple currently has no plans to upgrade the base iPad model, keeping it as the budget-friendly option. Additionally, there are rumors of a foldable iPad being developed, although its launch has been postponed until 2029. Apple’s OLED plans also extend to its MacBook lineup. The MacBook Pro is expected to receive an OLED display in its next major redesign alongside the M6 chipset. The latest MacBook Pro, powered by the M5 chip, featured only minor design updates, making the anticipated 2026 OLED refresh noteworthy.
There are also indications that Apple is looking into integrating touchscreen capabilities for future MacBook Pro models, potentially marking a new phase for macOS devices. Following the Pro, the MacBook Air will also transition to OLED, but users will need to wait until 2028 for this version, while the upcoming 2026 model will retain its current LCD screen. Apple’s move towards OLED displays signifies a crucial advancement in enhancing visual quality across its product range. While the upgrades may lead to higher prices, they promise sharper, more vibrant displays that could redefine the user experience and strengthen Apple’s position in the premium device market.
