Bihar's New Government Faces Disputes Over Ministerial Positions

Patna: The new government in Bihar is experiencing instability as senior leaders from the Janata Dal (United) were called to Delhi late Monday night, just before the state’s swearing-in ceremony. Union Minister Lalan Singh and JD(U) National Executive President Sanjay Jha flew on a special aircraft to meet with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officials as discussions regarding the new cabinet progress. While the two parties have reportedly settled on an equal division of ministerial roles, conflicts have escalated regarding the positions of Assembly Speaker and Deputy Chief Minister. The Speaker’s role, considered a significant source of influence in the state assembly, is the main issue of disagreement. Currently, the BJP occupies the Speaker position in the Legislative Assembly.

The JD(U), which holds the Chief Minister role, argues that since the BJP already has the Chairman of the Legislative Council, the Speaker’s position should be allocated to the JD(U). On the other hand, the BJP claims that the ruling party typically secures the Speaker role, leading to a deadlock between the coalition partners. As discussions continue in Delhi, both parties are maintaining close communication with their leadership. Officials indicate that an announcement regarding cabinet formation, including the distribution of ministerial posts and critical appointments, may be forthcoming soon.
