Hubli, May 5 (). The BJP is trying to make inroads in the Kalyan Karnataka region, which is a Congress bastion and the birthplace of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The saffron brigade is trying its best to stop the Congress here in the May 10 assembly elections.
The region comprising Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Vijayanagar districts has been a Congress bastion.
The area was owned by two former Chief Ministers of Karnataka, the late Virendra Patil and N. There is also the house of Dharam Singh.
Although there have been no major defections in Kalyana Karnataka, mining baron and former minister G. Janardhana Reddy has formed his own political outfit, the Karnataka Rajya Pragati Paksha (KRPP), which, however, cannot majorly influence other parts of Koppal district.
One of the major issues the BJP is trying to raise in the region is the Ladle Mashak shrine at Aland in Kalaburagi.
Pramod Muthalik’s controversial Shri Ram Sena is campaigning in the area that a Hindu temple was converted into a dargah.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath raised the issue during the election campaign.
Kalaburagi and Kalyan Karnataka have been areas of communal harmony, Mohammad Abdullah Hashim, a businessman from Kalaburagi, told . Some people are trying to raise unnecessary issues and BJP seems to have supported them. Everyone should avoid this.
The city of Kalyan in Bidar district was the birthplace of social reformer and poet Basaveshwara.
The iconic spiritual figure of the Lingayat community was born here and the city of Kalyan has been renamed Basava Kalyan.
