The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has initiated a structured competency-based assessment for students in Classes 6 and 9 for the academic year 2025–26, marking a notable transition towards evaluating genuine learning levels instead of rote memorization. This evaluation commenced on 10 November and will continue until 24 December, being implemented in over 35 CBSE-affiliated schools in Bhagalpur district alone. The board indicated that this initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and aims to assess students’ understanding of subjects and skill development in language, mathematics, science, and environmental studies. Unlike traditional exams, this assessment is not competitive; it seeks to identify students’ strengths and learning gaps to facilitate improvements in classroom practices.
The tests will utilize a CBSE-designed digital platform, enabling schools to obtain detailed analytical reports right after completion, which will pinpoint areas requiring targeted assistance. According to the timetable released by the board, Class 9 assessments are scheduled first: language on 10–11 November, mathematics on 13–14 November, science on 17–18 November, and a “club day” activity from 19 to 21 November. Assessments for Class 6 will take place from 24 November to 6 December. Local officials noted that in some schools, the process will start after election-related responsibilities are fulfilled. Educators have undergone specialized training to ensure the accurate and transparent implementation of the new evaluation system.
CBSE officials remarked that this competency-based model signifies a long-term commitment to quality education, with regular diagnostic assessments anticipated to become an integral part of school learning in the future.
