Bengaluru, May 31 (). Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written a letter to Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde on Wednesday. Through the letter, he requested CM Shinde to instruct the concerned officials to release water from Warna/Koyna reservoir to Krishna river and from Ujjani reservoir to Bhima river.
The CM said in the letter that the northern Karnataka districts of Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water from March 2023 due to the scorching heat. During this summer season, the Government of Karnataka was requested to immediately release 2 TMC water from Warna/Koyna reservoir to Krishna river and 3 TMC water from Ujjani reservoir to Bhima river in the first request. In the beginning of May 2023, 1 TMC water has been released in Krishna river in two weeks. I sincerely thank the Government of Maharashtra for this.
He said that severe heat wave conditions were still prevailing in the northern districts of Karnataka and humans and animals needed drinking water for domestic use. Monsoon is yet to set in over North Karnataka region. Therefore, I request you to immediately release 2 TMC water from Warna/Koyna reservoir to Krishna river and 3 TMC water from Ujjani reservoir to Bhima river to meet the drinking water needs of both humans and livestock in North Karnataka. Give instructions to the concerned authorities.
