Kolkata, May 1 (). The West Bengal unit of the Congress has called for a complete boycott of senior party leader and noted lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Trinamool Congress has called for Singhvi’s boycott to fight the case in the Supreme Court.
State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary on Monday said that despite repeated objections, some lawyers like Singhvi regularly take up cases of Trinamool Congress members.
Chowdhary said, he had accepted similar briefs for the Trinamool Congress in the Saradha chit fund and Narada videotape scams cases. At that time also, as the State Congress President, I had clearly stated that we do not want his presence in any party program in West Bengal. Now I’m saying it again. We are calling for a complete boycott of Singhvi.
He also said that as a member of the National Working Committee of the Congress, he would take up the matter at the highest level of the party.
Chowdhary further said, Singhvi’s argument was that the party leadership cannot decide on his profession as a legal advisor. If he has this professional right, then even ordinary Congress workers have the right to protest against any act of his which brings great shame to the party.
State Congress leader and Calcutta High Court lawyer Kaustav Bagchi has gone a step further and claimed that whenever Singhvi comes to Kolkata, he and his supporters will oppose Singhvi.
“Let the party high command take whatever disciplinary action it wants to take against me,” he said. But I will definitely protest against them.
Bagchi had sent a strongly worded letter to Singhvi on Sunday, saying, West Bengal Pradesh Congress workers and leaders have a clear view that we are ashamed of you.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has said that apart from professional commitment, Singhvi also has a political commitment to the party as he has gone to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the Trinamool Congress.
