Kolkata, May 10 (). Byron Biswas, the lone Congress MLA in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, on Wednesday approached the Calcutta High Court for security.
Biswas was elected as the Left Front-backed Congress candidate in the recent bypoll to the minority-dominated Sagardighi assembly constituency in Murshidabad district.
The Congress leader filed a petition before a single-judge bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, seeking the court’s direction for adequate security arrangements.
In his petition, the Congress leader claimed that he had been receiving threat calls ever since he was elected as the MLA from Sagardighi. Although, he had informed both the Union Home Ministry and the West Bengal Police in this regard, but neither side took any action on it.
Justice Mantha has accepted his plea and the matter will be heard on May 15.
In the 2021 assembly elections, both the Congress and the Left Front did not win any seats. The sudden demise of Trinamool Congress MLA and minister Subrata Saha led to the by-election in Sagardighi. Biswas emerged as the winner from this stronghold of Trinamool Congress.
The Sagardighi bypoll results were the first sign of a decline in Trinamool’s dedicated minority vote bank.
