Bengaluru, May 4 (). The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday issued notices to Karnataka BJP MLA Basanagowda Patil Yatnal and Congress MLA Priyank Kharge for using words like poison girl and useless son during their campaign for the May 10 assembly elections.
In its notice, the Election Commission has directed both the leaders to file their reply by 5 pm on May 4 (Thursday).
The notice has been issued for violating the model code of conduct and making personal attacks.
The Election Commission has asked both the leaders to explain why action should not be initiated against them.
BJP MLA from Karnataka’s Vijayapura constituency Yatnal called former Congress President Sonia Gandhi a Vishkanya (poisonous woman), while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s son Priyank called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a worthless son during a rally.
Yatnal criticized the AICC President’s remark on the ‘poisonous woman’ remark in which the Congress veteran compared PM Modi to a poisonous snake.
The Election Commission has given directions to political parties and star campaigners aimed at preventing personal attacks.
The Commission had said that it has seen many leaders ignoring the decorum of language during the election campaign.
The Election Commission has also directed the officials to initiate legal action against those found violating the Model Code of Conduct.
