Imphal, May 28 (). Several incidents of encounter between security forces and armed groups were reported from at least four districts in violence-hit Manipur on Sunday, in which people from both sides were injured. The officials gave this information.
Police officials in Imphal said encounters were reported from Churachandpur, Kakching, Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
Several Manipur police commandos and members of an unknown armed group were injured in these encounters. The injured police commandos were immediately taken to hospitals.
The identity of the armed groups was not immediately known. Further details of these incidents are awaited.
Additional security forces have been deployed in all the disturbed districts to control the situation and the district administration has also reduced the curfew relaxation period by three hours in these districts.
The capital of Manipur falls in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai is visiting trouble-torn Manipur from Thursday and Army Chief General Manoj Pandey from Saturday. Meetings are being held with various stakeholders including civil society organisations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also likely to visit Manipur for three days on Monday to take stock of the situation and resolve the ethnic crisis. He is likely to meet representatives of all communities, including the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Eastern Command Army Chief Lt Gen R.P. Kalita visited several sensitive and mixed population districts of Manipur from 22 to 24 May to take stock of the ground reality.
The Manipur government on Saturday extended the suspension of internet services till May 31 to check the spread of rumors and videos, photos and messages amid violent incidents.
The tribal solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur to protest the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the ST category on May 3 resulted in widespread violent clashes and attacks in more than 10 districts in the northeastern state, in which 70 people were killed. Lived and more than 300 people have been injured.
