Lucknow, May 12 (). Two resident doctors and three others were injured when a stray dog attacked them inside the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) campus. This is the 16th major case of dog attack in the capital of Uttar Pradesh in a year.
University authorities informed the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, which sent a team to the campus and found that the dog had died.
Although the cause of death is unknown, officials said the dog was suffering from rabies.
KGMU officials said the dog suddenly attacked people outside the radiology department on the campus and bit two resident doctors, two paramedical staff and a patient attendant.
Doctors Sushma Yadav and Sanjay Gupta were saved by other employees.
Sushma Yadav told reporters, “I was coming out of the radio diagnostic department when a stray dog came and bit me on my right leg.” I screamed, but it attacked my right arm again.
There was a two-inch long open wound on his right leg, while Sanjay Gupta had a one-inch wound on his left leg.
KGMU spokesperson Sudhir Singh said, “After the incident, I asked the LMC to catch the dog, but it was found dead before the team arrived.”
LMC Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Abhinav Verma said, the dog was suffering from rabies. The disease makes dogs aggressive and they die within a week of becoming infected.
The city veterinarian also said that rabies had made the dog restless, aggressive and ferocious.
Veterinarian Dr Rajneesh Chandra said victims need to be given anti-rabies vaccine along with antibodies for rabies, as in humans the virus directly attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis or death.
