Kolkata, May 27 (). Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the convoy of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, allegedly by a group of Kurmi protesters demanding Scheduled Tribe status. Police have not yet disclosed the identity of those arrested.
Charges were framed under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, as the rear windshield of West Bengal minister Birbaha Hansda’s vehicle was completely shattered during the attack on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee has claimed that he heard Jai Shri Ram slogans during the attack on his convoy. He said, I seek a statement from the Kurmi community leaders in this matter within the next 48 hours. Otherwise I would assume that they were involved in the attack.
The attack took place when his convoy was passing through the tribal-dominated Salboni area of West Midnapore district. Soon after the attack, Abhishek Banerjee spoke at length about the incident to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The chief minister immediately directed state chief secretary H K Dwivedi and state director general of police to take strict action in the matter.
Meanwhile, Hansda alleged that opposition parties like the BJP and the CPI(M) were instigating the Kurmi protesters.
Hansda said, Trinamool Congress never opposed the demand of Scheduled Tribe status of Kurmi community. Then why was our convoy attacked? This cannot be the nature of any caste movement.
On Saturday, Banerjee is scheduled to address a political rally in Salboni area.
