Guwahati, April 21 (). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said Gorkhas are an integral part of the wider Assamese community.
Participating in the Assam Gorkha convention held at Garpal in Sonitpur district, Sarma said that serious efforts have been made to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the members of the Gorkha community in Assam.
He said, the present government in the state has put an end to the persecution of Gorkhas in Assam in the name of identifying them as foreigners. The Chief Minister also spoke about several initiatives like the grant of protected class status to Gorkhas aimed at socio-economic empowerment of the community members.
Sarma said that henceforth the Assam Gorkha Sammelan would have the authority to issue Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates to eligible members of the community. He also said that steps would be taken to issue Gorkha certificates through dedicated portals, an initiative which would help the Gorkha youth of the state to join the armed forces.
The Chief Minister appealed to the Gurkhas of Assam not to separate themselves from their roots and work towards preserving the glory of their valour.
