Ranchi, April 28 (). Taking suo moto cognizance of the sale of adulterated milk and food items, the Jharkhand High Court heard the matter on Friday. The court expressed deep displeasure over the non-receipt of response from the state government in this matter.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra said that if the government’s response does not come till the next hearing in the matter of banning the sale of adulterated food items, then the Health Secretary will have to appear in the court. The court has fixed the next hearing of the case on June 16.
In the last hearing, the court had directed the state government to file a detailed reply. The court had asked the state government to give details related to the inspection of food items for the last one year. The court had asked the government how many samples of food items were collected every month by the Food Safety Officer in different districts of the state. How many of these samples were found wrong and what action was taken against the food items whose samples were found wrong. The court had also asked that what kind of food items are tested in the lab. In relation to all this, the court had directed the government to file a reply.
Amicus curiae Piyush Poddar appeared in the case. In the earlier hearing, the court was told by Amicus Curie that there are no Food Safety Officers in many districts of the state. In this regard, it was said on behalf of the government that in some districts Food Safety Officers have been appointed and the process of appointing some is going on through JPSC.
