Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday targeted the BJP government at the Center over the proposed inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28. He said that a woman from the tribal community was chosen as the President only for electoral gains, while the government has limited the presidential term.
In a series of tweets, Kharge said, it seems that the Modi government has ensured the election of the President of India from Dalit and Adivasi communities only for electoral reasons. He said, former President Ram Nath Kovind and present President Draupadi Murmu are not being invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament House.
Taking a jibe at the government, Kharge said, the Parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India, and the President of India is its supreme constitutional authority. She alone represents the government, the opposition and every citizen equally. He is the first citizen of India.
The inauguration of the new Parliament House by him would be a symbol of the government’s commitment to democratic values and constitutional decorum, he said. The Modi government has repeatedly disrespected decorum. The office of the President of India has been reduced to symbolism under the BJP-RSS government.
His remarks came a day after former party chief Rahul Gandhi expressed similar views and said that President Murmu should inaugurate the new Parliament House instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inauguration of the new Parliament House is scheduled for 28 May.
