The Union Education Ministry announced that the total number of teachers in India has exceeded 10 million for the first time in any academic year, as stated in its Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report for 2024-2025. This figure includes educators from both government and private schools. Notably, the academic year 2024-2025 has witnessed an increase in the proportion of female teachers, who now make up 54.2 percent of the overall teaching workforce, up from 46.9 percent in 2014-2015. Since 2014, a total of 5.14 million teachers have been hired, with women accounting for 61 percent of these recruits.
Officials have noted that the increasing number of female teachers has contributed to a rise in girls’ enrolment, which is at 48.3 percent of all new enrolments in 2024-2025, compared to 48.1 percent the previous year. However, the report indicates a decline in total enrolments, dropping from 251.79 million in 2022-2023 to 246.95 million in 2024-2025. This decline appears to correlate with a decrease in the percentage of admissions in primary classes (Grades 1 to 5), which fell from 48.7 percent in 2022-2023 to 48 percent in 2024-2025.
