Chennai, May 28 (). Raids by the Income Tax Department (IT) at the premises of Tamil Nadu Power and Prohibition and Excise Minister Senthil Balaji’s aides continued for the third consecutive day on Sunday.
Income Tax officials were conducting the raids after receiving several complaints against the minister and his associates regarding the liquor policy.
There were allegations that people close to the minister were taking money under the pseudonym Karur Gang and Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) was charging an extra Rs 10-20 per bottle. The allegation was that the money that was being collected extra was going into the vaults of people close to the minister.
Income Tax officials were attacked during a raid on Senthil Balaji’s brother Ashok on Friday and four officials were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karur Government Medical College Hospital.
Following the attack on IT department officials, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) provided security to the team of officials.
The DMK has strongly protested the raids being conducted at the premises of people closely associated with the minister. The minister told media persons in Karur that no raid was conducted at his residence and he was being framed.
