New Delhi, May 26 (). The Center on Friday notified the appointment of Justice RD Dhanuka as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He will retire on May 30 and thus his tenure as Chief Justice will be of only four days.
Center appointed Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court S.V. Gangapurwala’s appointment was also notified.
The Supreme Court collegium had on April 19 recommended the names of Justice Dhanuka and Justice Gangapurwala as heads of the high courts.
Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court T. Raja retired on May 24. The Supreme Court collegium had on April 19 reiterated its recommendation to elevate Justice Raja as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, though the same was not approved by the Centre.
In a notification, the Department of Justice said: In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Ramesh Devkinandan Dhanuka, Judge of the Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. His appointment will be effective from the date of assuming charge.
Born in 1961, Justice Dhanuka completed his schooling in Mumbai. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in commerce and law from the University of Bombay. He was on the Senior Counsel Panel of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai for the past several years and has appeared in a large number of cases representing the Municipal Corporation in the Bombay High Court.
