New Delhi, May 29 (). Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge met Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday. Gehlot said he has never seen a tradition in the party that the high command asks someone about the post he/she wants or is offered. To persuade him, his former deputy Sachin Pilot also arrived here for the meeting.
Pilot reached Kharge’s residence about an hour and a half after Gehlot arrived here for a meeting with the top leadership.
Former party chief Rahul Gandhi was also present in the meeting. This meeting is said to be important to remove the turmoil going on in the state leadership.
According to sources, party leaders Gehlot and Pilot have opened a front against each other regarding the crisis on the state leadership and the high command is preparing to take a decision on it.
A source said that apart from working towards bringing the two rival leaders together, the party leadership will also try to chalk out a strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in the desert state.
Earlier in the day, after reaching the national capital and talking to the media at the airport here, Gehlot was asked about speculation about him and party leader Pilot, he said: Never in my life have I seen such a tradition in the Congress Whether a leader asks for something or the high command asks him which position he wants.
Rejecting such reports, Gehlot said that all this is due to the media and it is possible that some leaders are getting such news planted.
He said, the high command and the Congress party are so strong that such a situation will never arise that you offer to persuade someone. It never happened, it will never happen…
The meeting took place just after Pilot’s ultimatum that he would launch a state-wide agitation if the state government did not fulfill his three demands by the end of this month.
Pilot has also demanded a high-level inquiry into the alleged scams during the tenure of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje government as one of his many demands.
The Rajasthan unit of the Congress has been in a state of turmoil since July 2020, when Pilot revolted demanding a change of leadership in the state.
Pilot, who was the deputy chief minister, was removed from office following the rebellion. He was also removed from the post of State Congress President.
Since then, tensions have been simmering within the state party unit and the crisis deepened ahead of the election of the party president in September last year.
