Kolkata, May 27 (). Kurmi leaders agitating in West Bengal demanding Scheduled Tribe status on Saturday warned that no action would be taken against community members or their leaders over the attack on the convoy of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday evening. In the event of police action, they will do a big movement.
Reacting to state minister Birbaha Hansda’s remark that she would not spare anyone involved in the attack, Kurmi leader Ajit Mahto on Saturday said if the administration tries to create an atmosphere of terror by arresting members of the community, Vengeance will also be taken from
What happened on Friday evening was unfortunate, Mahato said. But none of our men were involved in the attack. The names of members of the Kurmi community are being deliberately dragged into the matter. If the police tries to create an atmosphere of terror, we will not remain silent. We will prepare accordingly.
Another Kurmi leader, Suman Mahto, went a step further and threatened a massive agitation during the chief minister’s visit to tribal-dominated areas of the state in case of repressive police action against members of the community.
We have been protesting peacefully since the beginning in support of our demand. None of us were involved in Friday’s incident. There is a deep controversy behind dragging the name of the community in this matter. If necessary, we will hold a massive demonstration in front of the Chief Minister in support of our demands.
Four people have already been arrested in connection with the attack on Abhishek Banerjee’s convoy. However, the police are not yet revealing their identity.
The criminals have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including section 307 (attempt to murder). Charges have also been framed under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act since the rear windshield of Birbaha Hansda’s vehicle was completely smashed.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee has claimed that he heard the slogan of Jai Shri Ram during the attack.
He said, I seek a statement from the Kurmi community leaders in this matter within the next 48 hours. Otherwise I would assume that they were involved in the attack.
