Imphal, May 11 (). Kuki insurgents attacked a police patrol on Thursday at Tronglobi in the state’s Bishnupur district. A Manipur police commando was killed and four other policemen were injured in the attack.
A police officer in Imphal said commando Hisnam Jiten was killed and four other policemen received bullet injuries during an operation against Kuki insurgents. Further details of the events are awaited.
This attack by the militants has happened within less than 24 hours. Earlier, Kuki extremists opened fire on a team of Army and Assam Rifles at Dolaitabi in Imphal East district when they were patrolling the area. An Assam Rifles jawan was injured in this attack.
Defense sources had said that the armed terrorists fled after firing a few rounds. An Assam Rifles jawan, who received bullet injuries in the firing, was airlifted to a military hospital by an army helicopter.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Singh, the newly appointed security advisor to the Manipur government, said that 66 people have died so far in the recent violence in the state. He said that the search is on for the two missing people in Khumbong. After ethnic violence broke out on 3 May, miscreants and agitators snatched 1,041 arms and 7,460 rounds of ammunition from the security forces.
Manipur witnessed unprecedented violent clashes, strikes, counter-attacks in more than 10 districts during and after the tribal solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to protest the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes category. and saw arson of houses, vehicles, government and private properties.
However, the overall situation in ethnic violence-hit Manipur further improved on Thursday. Authorities relaxed curfew in 11 districts, including Imphal West and Churachandpur, for 4 to 8 hours in the morning, while the army and central paramilitary forces continued their vigil in sensitive areas. Mobile internet service will remain suspended in the state till May 13.
A total of 128 columns of Army and Assam Rifles continued the flag march in tense and violence-hit areas of various districts. Central forces also carried out round-the-clock aerial surveillance using drones and helicopters.
A defense release on Wednesday said the Indian Army’s three-pronged domination strategy in Manipur is helping the state return to normalcy. It said that the army is leaving no stone unturned to monitor trouble spots not only in the hinterland but also along the India-Myanmar border.
