Imphal, May 28 (). As tension and anxiety persist in the ethnic violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur, noted theater artist Ratan Thiyam has appealed to religious leaders in the state to play an active role in restoring peace and stability.
Thiyam, a 1987 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner, said that in view of the grave situation Manipur was facing, all religious leaders in temples, mosques and churches should try to find ways to restore peace.
“I urge them to help the government bring both sides of the conflict to the negotiating table,” he said.
In a statement, the theater veteran appealed to the state government at the Center to show its genuine commitment and empathy during this time of crisis in Manipur.
He said, I request the Center to continuously send different ministers one after the other to study the situation and understand the ground reality.
The 75-year-old Thiyam, a former chairman of the National School of Drama (from 2013-2017), further said that the common people are facing various difficulties, and are extremely affected by the price hike and shortage of essential commodities.
He said that at such a critical juncture, all the learned experts in the government should try their best to find a way out of the present crisis.
The internationally renowned theater personality appealed to all ministers and legislators to jointly visit the affected places and listen to people’s grievances.
