Bengaluru, May 16 (). As the race for the next chief minister of Karnataka heats up, sources in the Congress party have confirmed that a majority of legislators have expressed their desire for senior leader Siddaramaiah to take over the top post. According to sources, Siddaramaiah has the support of more than 80 MLAs.
The party high command has made it clear from the very beginning that he will be made the Chief Minister, who will get the support of the MLAs. In such a situation, now Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar’s road to the post of Chief Minister seems difficult.
Shivakumar, who was scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi on Monday, canceled his meeting citing ill health.
He will reach Delhi on Tuesday and attend a high-level meeting to decide on the chief minister’s post.
Significantly, after the remarkable victory of Congress in the assembly elections held on May 10, Shivakumar became emotional and had tears in his eyes.
He said that he fulfilled the promise made to Sonia Gandhi.
Shivkumar is also addressing Sonia Gandhi as Tayi and Amma (mother).
Shivakumar said he has dedicated 135 MLAs to the Congress, and now the party has to decide.
Meanwhile, Bangalore Rural MP and Shivakumar’s brother D.K. Suresh met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and urged that his brother should become the chief minister.
Sources said an announcement would be made by the end of Tuesday and the new chief minister would take over by Wednesday or Thursday.
