Imphal, May 3 (). Tension prevailed in Manipur for the past one week, with mobile internet services again suspended for another five days on Wednesday, while curfew continued for the fifth consecutive day in the hilly Churachandpur district. An officer gave this information.
Night curfew was also imposed in several tense hill districts on Wednesday.
In a tribal solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) in all 10 hill districts of Manipur, thousands of tribals on Wednesday protested against the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
Police said sporadic incidents were reported in several districts and tension prevailed in some hill districts following ATSUM-backed rallies.
Tension prevailed in Churachandpur, Senapati, Chandel, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts, where authorities were forced to impose a curfew as markets closed and public transport suspended.
The valley is dominated by Meiteis and they have been demanding Scheduled Tribe status, alleging that infiltration from Bangladesh and Myanmar is destroying the demographic pattern in the state.
