Modi and Trump Show Hope for Renewed India-US Trade Discussions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about advancing trade discussions despite existing tensions surrounding tariffs. In their second positive social media interaction within four days, both leaders highlighted the significance of enhancing India-US relations. PM Modi characterized India and the US as ‘close friends and natural partners,’ emphasizing that ongoing negotiations would unlock the immense potential of their partnership. He noted that both parties were striving to conclude discussions promptly and reiterated his desire to converse with Trump soon. Trump reciprocated this sentiment in a post, referring to Modi as his ‘very good friend’ and conveying confidence that reaching a successful trade agreement would not pose any challenges.

His comments emerged amidst reports that he had requested the European Union to contemplate imposing tariffs of up to 100% on India and China to exert pressure on Russia. The trade conflict intensified after Trump raised tariffs on Indian imports to 50% in response to New Delhi’s oil purchases from Moscow. Despite these tensions, both administrations continue to show a willingness to negotiate. Senior officials from both sides are actively working to finalize a trade agreement, which may align with Trump’s upcoming visit to India for the Quad Summit.

The recent exchanges between Modi and Trump indicate a change in tone from earlier criticisms by Trump’s advisers, who accused India of imposing unfair tariffs and supporting Russia’s military actions through energy imports. Presently, both leaders seem eager to regain momentum in trade discussions and reaffirm their strategic partnership.
