New Delhi: The 12th National Abilympics Skill Competitions and the 12th National Conference on Disability (NCD) commenced today at the Civil Services Officers Institute (CSOI), New Delhi, marking the launch of a significant platform in India aimed at promoting disability inclusion, skill development, and systemic reform. The event is organized by Sarthak Educational Trust in partnership with the National Abilympic Association of India (NAAI) and has received support from the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), TPCDT, and IndusInd Bank. It follows the successful conclusion of four Regional Abilympics held in Chennai (South), Mumbai (West), Lucknow (North), and Guwahati (East & North East). The opening day featured prominent guests, including Dr.
Vineet Joshi, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (Chief Guest), Shri Rajiv Kumar, Former Chief Election Commissioner, and Shri Himal Tewari, CHRO and Chief CSR & Sustainability at Tata Power. Speakers underscored the necessity for enhanced collaboration among government, corporations, and civil society to boost disability inclusion in India. They also emphasized the National Abilympics’ role as a platform that not only honors skill but also creates pathways for livelihood, dignity, and long-term empowerment. The two-day national finale gathered 59 regional medallists from over 20 states across India.
These finalists, chosen from more than 500 competitors in zonal contests, started their competitions today in various vocational categories, including ICT (Engineering Design, Desktop Publishing, Photography), Crafts (Basket Making, Crochet, Painting & Decoration), Hospitality (Cake Decoration, Patisserie, Cleaning Services), and Services (Hairdressing, Massage). The national-level winners will be one step closer to the chance of representing India at the 11th International Abilympics 2027 in Finland, recognized globally as the ‘Work Skill Olympics for Persons with Disabilities.’ For many participants, this marks their first experience competing on a national level, further highlighting the Abilympics’ mission of turning talent into real opportunities.
