Bhubaneswar, June 4 (). Over 100 bodies of passengers killed in the tragic train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district were brought to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Sunday morning.
The bodies were brought in 50 ambulances from Balasore and kept at the AIIMS mortuary, an official said.
The Odisha government has decided to bring around 160 bodies to Bhubaneswar which will be kept in the mortuaries of various government and private hospitals.
The rail link between Bhadrak and Balasore has been cut off due to the accident. Chief Secretary P.K. Jena said that family members can easily travel to Bhubaneswar to find the bodies of loved ones, so they have been kept in Bhubaneswar.
The unidentified bodies will be kept safe for 42 hours, Jena said. If no one claims the dead bodies, we can dispose of them as per medical procedures.
According to official sources, around 55 bodies have been identified and handed over to the relatives after postmortem.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the Bahanga train tragedy. This help will be given from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
He also announced an assistance of Rs one lakh each for those seriously injured in the accident.
The Chief Minister has also expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery of the injured.
At least 288 people were killed and over 1,100 injured when the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express and Howrah-bound SMVP-Howrah Superfast Express derailed near Bahanga Bazar railway station in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday evening.
A total of 1,175 patients have been admitted to various hospitals in Odisha, out of which 793 have been discharged. Sources said that at least 382 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, out of which the condition of only two passengers is critical.
