Chandigarh, June 4 (). Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Punjab MP Vikramjit Singh Sahni on Sunday demanded that all government documents related to Operation Bluestar be declassified.
In a message sent to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Union Home Ministry, Sahni urged them that the files should be made accessible.
Operation Bluestar was a military operation ordered by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to flush out militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale hiding in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.
Sahni is helping Punjabi women stranded in Muscat to return from Oman.
Sahni, in a statement here, termed Operation Bluestar as a gross violation of human rights, brutal killings of thousands of people and destruction of the holy sanctum sanctorum of Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht Sahib, the supreme seat of Sikhism.
Sahni said that only knowing the truth would be justice for this heinous crime, for which it is necessary that all relevant documents be made public.
Forty-nine years is a long time to avoid the truth behind Operation Bluestar, he said. This (declassification) is the only way to unlock and hold the culprits accountable.
Emphasizing on the sensitivity of the implications of releasing details about Operation Bluestar, Sawhney said, “We cannot forget that 39 years have passed and it is impossible to forget what happened, but the release of the documents in the holy Sri Harmandir Sahib.” A better understanding of what led to the extraordinary military operation would emerge.
Operation Bluestar was carried out between June 1 and 8, 1984, and resulted in loss of lives and damage to the shrine and premises.
