Operation of ex-IIT professor done without family's consent

Lucknow, May 14 (). Neurosurgeon of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) operated on an 85-year-old former IIT Roorkee professor without the family’s consent. Due to lack of consent, the professor’s brain had stopped for more than 20 days.

The five-hour operation on Saturday by a team led by Professor BK Ojha, head of the Department of Neurosurgery, was successful and the patient, Professor Devendra Swaroop Bhargava, was shifted to Shatabdi Hospital, where he has been kept under observation due to co-morbidities .

Professor Kshitij Srivastava, who was part of the team, said he was suffering from acute subdural hematoma, a medical emergency in which blood accumulates between the brain and its outermost layer. This is a very serious situation. Now we hope that he will regain consciousness soon.

Bhargava was admitted to the Aastha Center for Geriatric Medicine Hospital and Hospice in a semi-conscious state about 20 days ago.

Divorced 20 years ago, Bhargava has lived alone in the city’s Sahara Estate, Jankipuram, for a decade.

The consent of the doctors could not be obtained for immediate surgery. Dr. Abhishek Shukla, Director, Aastha Hospital, contacted the CMO for further direction and requested him to arrange some financial assistance.

After this the doctors of KGMU came forward and agreed to operate on the patient.
