Prashant Kishore Initiates Silent Fast Following Election Setback

Bettiah: Prashant Kishore has commenced a silent fast at the historic Bhitiharwa Gandhi Ashram in West Champaran, one day after the results of the Bihar elections. He arrived at the Ashram early on 20 November, laid flowers at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, and took his place to begin the fast. He has chosen to remain silent until 11am on 21 November, after which he will engage with both the media and the public. This fast is viewed as a direct reaction to the disappointing results for the Jan Suraj campaign. The leadership of Jan Suraj acknowledged that they struggled to effectively communicate their mission to the people of Bihar during the elections.

Since Kishore is maintaining silence, Jan Suraj State President Manoj Bharti addressed the press on his behalf at the Ashram. Bharti stated that while Jan Suraj focused on several crucial issues — including education, employment, and curbing migration — their message did not resonate strongly enough with the average voter. He indicated that the silent fast serves as a moment for reflection on these shortcomings rather than placing blame on others. Bharti elaborated that this act should be seen as both self-examination and an apology. He noted that despite the party’s three years of effort, it failed to garner sufficient support as the public did not grasp the complete and clear essence of Jan Suraj’s objectives.

He mentioned that the immediate step post-fast would involve re-establishing direct communication with the public and presenting the movement in a straightforward and honest manner. He added that Kishore and the entire team now possess renewed determination to resume their ground efforts and reconnect with individuals in every district. Despite the electoral defeat, Jan Suraj remains committed to advocating for change in Bihar. Bharti assured that the movement will persist with increased vigor and that the party is prepared to serve as a responsible voice for the people. “Our struggle has not ceased,” he affirmed.

“We will monitor those in power and ensure that public expectations are met.” Following Kishore’s conclusion of silence on 21 November, Jan Suraj is set to unveil its forthcoming roadmap.
