Security forces, mobs destroy militant camps in Manipur

Imphal, June 5 (). Security forces and mobs destroyed camps of Kuki militants in various districts, while sporadic incidents of violence were reported from different parts of violence-hit Manipur. Officials gave this information on Monday.

Police in Imphal said angry villagers set ablaze an abandoned camp of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) at Sugnoo in Kakching district on Sunday night.

UKLF cadres are using the strategically important camp before moving on to their intended destinations on operational missions.

Former minister and Congress MLA K.K. Angry villagers were venting their anger after a large number of abandoned houses, including Ranjit’s residence, were torched on Saturday midnight.

In another incident, joint security forces demolished a UKLF base camp at Nazareth in adjoining areas of Chandel and Kakching districts on Sunday night. Earlier, there was heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and the UKLF cadres.

Though the security forces were able to flush out the suspected Kuki militants from the camp, the extremists managed to escape during the encounter. The search operation is going on in the hilly areas by the security forces.

Meanwhile, reports said that at least three people, including a woman, died after a mob attack in Imphal West district.

The incident took place in Lamsang on Sunday night. The victims were traveling in two vehicles.

A state government official in Imphal said the army and the Assam Rifles, along with Manipur police commandos and other central armed police forces, including the Border Security Force, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, recovered the looted weapons. And have continued their search operation to nab the militants.
