New Delhi, June 1 (). In view of the nationwide protest called by the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) in support of the country’s top wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Delhi Police has cordoned off all the borders of the city including Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur. Security measures have been tightened.
Additional police personnel have been deployed and additional check posts have been set up to prevent any untoward incident, a senior police officer said on Thursday.
Security has been beefed up, another official said. We have increased the presence of police personnel by setting up additional check posts on the borders of Delhi. Our aim is to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident.
The official also mentioned that intensive checking is being done at the borders of vehicles entering Delhi from neighboring states.
The SKM had announced demonstrations and burning of effigies against the WFI chief at village and town centers on Tuesday, June 5. It is noteworthy that on the same day, RSS workers and mahants called a rally in Ayodhya in support of Brij Bhushan.
The SKM also condemned the brutal suppression of the wrestlers’ protest on 28 May, the day women wrestlers called a Mahila Mahapanchayat.
It said, the Modi government’s action against wrestlers who protested against sexual harassment proves that it is an anti-women and anti-people agenda. The crackdown on protests violates citizens’ right to protest, which has been repeatedly upheld by the Supreme Court.
The SKM also demanded withdrawal of the FIR against the protesters and the arrest of Brij Bhushan.
