Chandigarh, May 30 (). The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has condemned the government’s crackdown on women Olympian wrestlers protesting for justice at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
SGPC general secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal said the government’s crackdown on those who raise their voice for human rights is a blot on democracy.
He said that on the one hand the newly constructed Parliament is being inaugurated and on the other hand atrocities are being committed on women wrestlers who have brought laurels to the country, due to which the whole country is ashamed.
Grewal said that as per the instructions of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, a delegation of SGPC was to join the protest for justice in support of the wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, but due to the forcible action taken by the government to remove the protest on Sunday This program has been postponed for the time being.
He said that SGPC stands firmly with these women wrestlers and will extend full cooperation in whatever program is made.
Grewal also objected that a negative narrative is being created by some people whenever the Sikh community, following its history and traditions, stood by those fighting for human rights. Sikhs have always made sacrifices to protect the country and Sikhs do not need to learn patriotism from anyone.
On the other hand, SGPC executive member Gurinder Kaur Bholuwal said that it is unfortunate that girls who have brought laurels to the country by winning medals in sports are being harassed.
He said that instead of listening to these girls, the government is dragging them on the streets. He said that SGPC will always stand firmly with these girls against any injustice.
