During the International Day of Older Persons, Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, emphasized that society derives strength from the elderly, who serve as the foundation of families and communities. She stated that emotional support from families and communities is the most significant form of support for older individuals. Although there are government programs for senior citizens, she urged other stakeholders to take initiative as well. Dr. Sharma expressed these views at an event held at Sitaram Bhartia Hospital, themed “Pearls of Wisdom: Stories That Shape Us from Seniors.” The event honored three distinguished seniors: 95-year-old Dr. Sneh Bhargava, the first female director of AIIMS; 93-year-old gynaecologist Dr. V L Bhargava; and 82-year-old cardiologist Dr.
Hemlata Tiwari, who were each recognized as “Smart Seniors” and shared their valuable insights. AIIMS medical superintendent Dr. Nirupam Madaan elaborated on the challenges the elderly face today, including their needs, societal importance, necessary infrastructure improvements, essential changes, and financial security. He noted that India currently has 14.9 crore (149 million) individuals over the age of 60, a number projected to increase to 34.7 crore (347 million) by 2050, and 55 crore (550 million) by 2100, making up 36 percent of the total population. Dr. Madaan insisted that preparations for these changes must commence immediately.
