Congress MP Shashi Tharoor defended his birthday tribute to BJP leader LK Advani after critics challenged his commendation, citing the controversial Rath Yatra linked to the Babri Masjid demolition. In a response on X, Tharoor argued that it is unfair to evaluate Advani’s long-standing service based on a single event. He drew parallels with how one should not judge Jawaharlal Nehru solely on the China conflict or Indira Gandhi merely for the Emergency, calling for ‘the same courtesy’ towards Advani. Lawyer Sanjay Hegde criticized Tharoor’s comments, recalling Khushwant Singh’s denunciation of Advani for fostering ‘the dragon seeds of hatred.’ Nevertheless, Tharoor insisted that Advani’s role in India’s political development transcends one incident.
In his tribute, Tharoor included an old photo with Advani, recognizing him as a ‘true statesman’ noted for his humility, integrity, and impact on modern India. Tharoor has frequently taken positions that diverge from the Congress party’s stance, attracting attention for his independent views. Previously, he authored an article addressing dynastic politics in the Nehru-Gandhi family, which the BJP labeled a ‘truth bomb.’ His candid remarks have drawn both praise and criticism across the political landscape.
