New Delhi, May 14 (). On several occasions when the Congress’s fortunes at the national level were bad, it got a new lease of life from South India. The results of the Karnataka assembly elections on Saturday once again proved that after back-to-back defeats in two general elections and several assembly elections, the old party, which is working hard to breathe new life once again A very important opportunity has been given. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who is also the party’s communication in-charge, highlighted the pattern of the party’s revival from the south.
In a tweet, he said, this is an extraordinary result for the Congress party in Chikmagalur district, which had become a BJP bastion. It won all 5 out of 5 seats there. In 1978, Indira Gandhi started the party’s resurgence at the national level by winning the election from Chikmagalur. History will soon repeat itself!
After the imposition of Emergency in 1975, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was defeated in the 1977 general elections, even losing her Rae Bareli parliamentary seat in Uttar Pradesh.
After a humiliating defeat in the general elections, Indira Gandhi decided to go to South India for the revival of the party and a year later she decided to contest the Lok Sabha by-election from the Chikmagalur parliamentary seat.
She won the 1978 by-elections from Chikmagalur and returned to Parliament and then made a national comeback in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress, which once again faced a challenge to its existence in the late 90s following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, saw a revival of its fortunes once again from Karnataka.
After the death of Rajiv Gandhi, his wife Sonia Gandhi distanced herself from politics. However, he was forced to enter politics in 1998 to reinvigorate the weakening party.
Sonia Gandhi then decided to contest the 1999 Lok Sabha elections from Bellary in Karnataka and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and won both the seats.
He defeated senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj in Bellary. However, after winning from both the seats, he chose to represent Amethi in the Lok Sabha.
After winning in 1999, Sonia Gandhi returned the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to power in 2004, serving two consecutive terms under Manmohan Singh as prime minister.
The 2023 Karnataka elections and Chikmagalur winning all five seats have given new hope to the Congress, which is going through its worst phase in nine years, losing power in several states and losing two Lok Sabha elections. . The Congress is currently in power in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh on its own. It is a partner in the government in Bihar and Jharkhand.
In this year’s assembly elections, the Congress is set to return to power with 136 of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly.
