Prayagraj, March 28 (). A Prayagraj MP/MLA court has convicted gangster-turned-politician Ateeq Ahmed and two others for abducting Umesh Pal, the key witness in the 2006 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. The court has sentenced all three to life imprisonment. On Tuesday, the court announced the sentence amidst a huge crowd in the court premises.
The court has acquitted six others including Atiq Ahmed’s brother Ashraf.
After the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, the then district panchayat member Umesh Pal told the police that he was an eyewitness to the murder.
Umesh Pal alleged that he was abducted at gunpoint on February 28, 2006, when he refused to back down and bow to Atiq Ahmed’s pressure.
The FIR was registered on July 5, 2007 against Ahmed, his brother and four unidentified persons.
Umesh Pal was shot dead on February 24 this year outside his Prayagraj residence. Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf have been accused of being involved in a conspiracy to kill Umesh Pal while in jail.
Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf and another accused were present in the court when the verdict was pronounced.
The two others convicted along with Atiq Ahmed are Dinesh Pasi and Shaukat Haneef. He has also been sentenced to life imprisonment.
A huge crowd was seen outside the local court during the hearing of the Umesh Pal kidnapping case in Prayagraj.
Atiq Ahmed was brought to the court amid tight security.
