Kolkata, April 3 (). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday issued summons to four officials of the Customs department in connection with the multi-crore cattle smuggling scam in West Bengal. The arrested officers have been on the radar of the central agency for a long time for their alleged involvement in the case.
While the agency remained tight-lipped about the identity and other details of the accused, sources said they were instrumental in helping kingpin Enamul Haque get the seized smuggled cattle auctioned at very cheap rates, which were then re-exported across the borders. was sent for smuggling across the
The sources further said that apart from the Customs officials, some top senior officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) were also under the scanner of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) during their parallel probe into the scam.
Earlier, BSF commandant Satish Kumar, posted along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the crime.
It is learned that during the last few days, CBI officials conducted raids and search operations at the residences of Customs officials posted in Indo-Bangladesh border districts of Nadia and Murshidabad.
CBI officials also got certain leads about the involvement of these four customs officials in the case, after which they were summoned.
