Lucknow, April 6 (). Sharpshooter Abdul Kavi, who was on the run for 18 years after being named in the 2005 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal murder case, surrendered in the Lucknow CBI court. A CBI lawyer confirmed that Atiq’s aide Abdul Kavi had surrendered and was sent to jail in judicial custody for 14 days. There was a reward of one lakh rupees on the poet’s head.

Bhanu Bhaskar, additional director general (DG) of Prayagraj zone, said after several police teams chased the poet across the country, succumbing to pressure, he surrendered. 15 police teams were conducting searches in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Raipur, Satna, Katni, Jabalpur, Prayagraj, Jalaun, Chitrakoot, Shravasti, Meerut and Saharanpur.

The DG said 19 family members, including the poet’s brother, sister, brother-in-law and others, have been arrested, while 28 arms licenses of his relatives and associates were canceled in a month.

In the first week of March, Abdul Qadir, the poet’s elder brother, was arrested by the Kaushambi police on charges of keeping illegal weapons in his house.

During a raid at the poet’s house in Bhakanda village under Sarai Akeel police station area, the Kaushambi police recovered a rifle, four country-made pistols, several live cartridges and two knives hidden in the walls.

An FIR was lodged against 11 people including five women in this connection.

Those named in the FIR include Abdul Kavi, his father Abdul Ghani, Kavi’s wife Kaneez Fatima, brother Abdul Qadir and others.
