According to District Superintendent of Police Kamnasish Sen, the two accused have been identified as Indrajit Giri and Lalbabu Kumar. He was arrested on Monday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the March 1 murder of Raju Jha.

Both were arrested from a rented house in Ranchi. He was produced before a court in East Burdwan district, from where he was sent to 10-day police custody.

The main allegation against Giri and Kumar is that they were responsible for arranging the car in which Raju Jha’s killers arrived and fled the scene after shooting Jha at close range.

Earlier on April 19, the police had arrested Avijit Mandal, a resident of Panagarh in West Burdwan district. Mandal was the driver of another coal baron, Narayan Khagra, who was once very close and trusted by Jha.

Significantly, Jha was shot dead on NH-19 near Langcha Hub, a chain of sweet shops in Shaktigarh. His colleague Brotin Bandyopadhyay, who was traveling with him in the SUV, was injured in the attack.

Jha was arrested by the police from Raniganj in July 2011, months after the Trinamool Congress came to power for the first time in West Bengal, but was later released on bail. Since then, he was arrested several times.

He was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the agency’s probe into the multi-crore coal smuggling scam in West Bengal.
