London, May 13 (). India will launch a diplomatic campaign to get back the Kohinoor diamond and thousands of other items from the British colonial past. Telegraph UK gave this information. Officials in New Delhi are making preparations in this regard.
The Telegraph UK reported that India’s ministerial and diplomatic staff will be mobilized to secure the return of potentially thousands of artefacts taken to Britain during the days of India’s rule in what one source described as a reckoning with the past.
It is understood that their aim is to secure the return of the Kohinoor diamond. One of the Crown Jewels held in trust for the King.
The Telegraph UK reported that bringing back historical artefacts taken from India is one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priorities.
Govind Mohan, secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture, said that the return of the antiquities would be an important part of India’s policy-making. It is very important for the government, he said.
The Archaeological Survey of India, a branch of the Ministry of Culture, has been leading efforts to retrieve smuggled objects from the country since independence.
The report added that the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has already been contacted regarding the bronze statue taken from a temple in southern India.
