Guwahati, May 20 (). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe the mysterious death of Assam Police officer Junmoni Rabha in an accident earlier this month. Director General of Police G.P. Singh gave this information on Saturday.
Talking to reporters here, Singh said that there is a widespread public sentiment for handing over the case to the CBI.
We had a detailed discussion on the matter, he said. I personally spoke to senior police officers. After reviewing every aspect of the case, we have come to the consensus that it should be investigated by the CBI.
Earlier, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police was probing the case.
Rabha’s car collided head-on with a container truck on the highway in Kaliabor area of Nagaon district on Tuesday night.
The car was completely shattered due to the forceful collision.
He was taken to the hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.
The DGP further said: I also had a meeting with the CID officials who were probing the matter. Since one of our officers has lost his life, it is only appropriate that an independent agency investigates the matter. Accordingly, we have recommended handing over Rabha’s case to the CBI.
However, he has also made it clear that this does not mean that the potential of the CID has been underestimated.
Singh said, I have full faith in the CID team. Over the years, CID officers have successfully investigated all the cases assigned to the agency and reached a logical conclusion. The CBI inquiry was recommended in Jumony Rabha’s case only to maintain fairness and public sentiment has been followed.
Meanwhile, the SPs of Lakhimpur and Nagaon, Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa and Leena Dole, were transferred.
Rabha was posted in Nagaon district and was probing a case allegedly related to a fake gold racket.
The deceased policeman had hit headlines two years back when she called off her engagement after he was accused of corruption.
Later, Rabha was also charged with corruption, criminal conspiracy, cheating and was arrested.
He was granted bail by the sessions court.
