Noida, May 25 (). A supercomputer equipped with advanced technology will be installed at a cost of Rs 900 crore at the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) located in Sector-62, Noida. This supercomputer will give accurate weather forecast information up to 11.2 peta flops from the current system. With this system, forecast of all natural calamities like snowfall, cyclone in the country and the world can be made seven days in advance.
The Union Minister, who reached the Sector-62 National Medium Range Weather Forecasting Center at 3 pm on Wednesday, first got acquainted with the functioning of the technology present in the institute. After this, he held a meeting with the meteorologists and discussed about the information related to the weather forecast. The Union Minister said that at present the institute has a supercomputer of 6.8 Peta Flops installed, the new supercomputer which is going to be installed will have a capacity of 18 Peta Flops. This will provide accurate weather forecast information. PM will announce the name of the super computer. During this meeting, including the Principal Secretary of Earth Sciences, meteorologists from several national centers participated.
Higher level calculations can be done in supercomputers than normal computers. A normal computer can process one million instructions per second, but the performance of a supercomputer is measured in notching point operations per second. Noting points is the encoding of numbers long enough to transmit them easily. It can do many things at a time.
It will include quantum mechanics, weather forecasting, climate research, oil and natural gas exploration, aerodynamics for aircraft and spacecraft, detonation and fusion of nuclear weapons.
