PMK sources told that party president Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has directed all district committees to organize public awareness programs against alcohol consumption.
The PMK has been a votary for the prohibition of liquor in Tamil Nadu and has entered into several public protest programs against it. The PMK women’s wing was also involved in holding protests against liquor becoming a menace to the people.
Two spurious liquor tragedies in the state had killed 22 people and left 40 others ill, some of whom had lost their eyesight.
Police have said that liquor containing methyl alcohol was used for supply in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts and the PMK wanted the party’s district committees across the state to take up the issue and call for complete prohibition in the state.
According to sources, the party will take out district-level protest marches towards the district collectorate, conduct padyatras in districts and hold corner meetings to talk to people about the ill-effects of alcohol and tell them how many productive hours are wasted due to consumption of alcohol.
The state president of the party, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and the founder leader of the party, Dr. S. Ramadoss will address public meetings in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.
The PMK, which is the political wing of the powerful Vanniyar community, is focusing on becoming a major political party in the state. The PMK leadership is taking up socially relevant issues in a focused manner and establishing itself as the number one political party of the state.
According to sources, the party is hoping to garner the support of women and unemployed youth in its effort against liquor and is planning to corner both the DMK and the AIADMK as both the Dravidian parties seek to increase the number of government liquor outlets. Has been working
