Odisha to Launch Pilot Training Program for Tribal Girls

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Monday that his government will initiate a cadet pilot program aimed at training tribal girls to become pilots. This announcement was made during the Eastern Region Ministers’ Conference for Civil Aviation. The cadet pilot program will be part of the State’s flagship initiative, B-MAAN (Building and Management of Aviation Assets and Network). Officials indicated that comprehensive theoretical and practical pilot training will be offered free of charge to approximately 10 to 15 tribal girls each year over the next five years. The Chief Minister highlighted that a world-class international airport is currently under construction in Puri, intended to serve as a spiritual and cultural gateway for millions of Jagannath devotees globally.

He also mentioned that arrangements have been made for the expansion of Jharsuguda airport. In the past 14 months under the new government, Odisha has connected its airports to 15 new destinations. Thanks to its robust policies, the State has successfully integrated into both national and international air travel networks. Majhi emphasized the importance of skill development in the aviation sector, announcing the establishment of a world-class aviation training center at Birasal in Dhenkanal district to advance Odisha’s capabilities in this area. Furthermore, he stated that a progressive land allotment policy for airports will be introduced, facilitating flying training, UAV (drone) training, and air sports activities at Odisha’s airports. The government also plans to develop 14 non-operational airstrips into airports.

Additionally, the Chief Minister revealed efforts to establish a total of 15 heliports in districts lacking airports. He noted that transformative initiatives such as the UDAN scheme have inspired and democratized aviation, creating new opportunities for eastern India. “Aviation extends beyond airports and air services; it represents a unique endeavor to connect the aspirations of our people with opportunities, bolster our economy, and fulfill the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047,” Majhi stated. On this occasion, the State government signed an agreement with Air Works for the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for aircraft at Biju Patnaik International Airport.
