Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, Odisha’s Director General of Police Y B Khurania urged police officials to accelerate investigations into serious crimes against women and ensure that offenders face suitable penalties. Speaking at a two-day State conference focused on Women’s Safety, he noted that heinous acts like gang-rape occurring in various districts demoralize women within the community. “The women of Odisha are the foundation of society. Their contributions to the community are commendable. However, they often face rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, public harassment, and cyber crimes, which is a significant concern,” Khurania stated. He recommended that Investigating Officers, Supervising Officers, and district Superintendents of Police stay vigilant and proactive in preventing crimes against women.
The DGP emphasized that safeguarding women and girls is a primary responsibility of the Odisha Police. He expressed a commitment to making Odisha a leading example of women’s safety in the nation in the future. Khurania encouraged police personnel to collaborate in establishing a safer Odisha. Highlighting the low conviction rate for crimes against women in the State, he pointed out that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports a mere 9.1 percent conviction rate, which is unsatisfactory. He noted that improvements could be made by hastening investigations, offering proper training, and showing compassion toward victims.
The DGP mentioned that existing laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, can facilitate prompt punishment for offenders. He also called for increased cyber patrolling and more proactive monitoring of social media to curb the rapid spread of sensitive images and videos involving women and children.
