The Opposition on Monday described the Supreme Court’s decision to stay certain key provisions of the new Waqf law, which they deemed “blatantly problematic,” as a “tight slap on the face” of the Modi government. They argued that the ruling BJP could have avoided this “embarrassment” had they listened to their counsel. While the Supreme Court did not invalidate the entire law, the Opposition parties celebrated the order as a victory for the constitutional principles of justice, equality, and fraternity, calling for the law’s repeal based on the lessons learned from the ruling.
The government also viewed the decision positively, with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asserting that it is a “very good sign” for democracy, emphasizing that the provisions are advantageous for the entire Muslim community and will help prevent misuse, including property encroachments via the Waqf Board.
