In a surprising turn of events, the producers of Kalki 2898 AD have announced that Deepika Padukone will not return for the sequel. This announcement follows director Nag Ashwin’s recent statement indicating that the filming of Kalki 2 will be delayed, primarily due to Prabhas’ busy schedule with various projects, including The Raja Saab, Fauji, and Spirit. The first film, which was released earlier this year, achieved massive success, grossing over ₹1,100 crore globally. Deepika’s character played a crucial role in the plot, making her departure from the franchise particularly unexpected.
In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the producers stated: “This is to officially announce that Deepika Padukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.” The wording of this statement has caught attention for its focus on “commitment,” implying possible differences in working styles.
Previously, Deepika was reportedly removed from Prabhas and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit after suggesting an eight-hour work shift, which the producers deemed too restrictive for the needs of the project. Her exit from two major Prabhas films has ignited discussions within industry circles, with fans expressing disappointment and curiosity regarding her potential replacements. For now, Kalki 2 will proceed without its original female lead, marking a significant casting change for this highly anticipated sequel in Indian cinema.
