In response to online backlash regarding his remarks on the reconstruction of a Lord Vishnu idol, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai emphasized his respect for all religions. He stated, “Someone told me the other day that the comments I made have been portrayed in social media…I respect all religions.” On May 16, a bench that included the CJI and Justice K Vinod Chandran dismissed a petition requesting the reconstruction and installation of a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple, located within the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.
Describing the petition as “publicity interest litigation,” the CJI remarked, “This is purely publicity interest litigation… Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation.” He also suggested that devotees who are open to Shaivism could worship at the temple’s significant Shiva linga. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad criticized Chief Justice Gavai’s comments, arguing that such statements, which mock Hindu beliefs, should be avoided.
